Bidspirit auction | An East African Carved Ebony

An East African Carved Ebony Standing Male Figure with Mixed Media. No reserve. - A carved wooden standing figure, likely of East African origin, produced in the mid-to-late 20th century. The figure is fashioned from a dense, dark-stained hardwood, consistent with ebony, and depicts a male figure in a standing pose. The facial features include distinctive almond-shaped eyes highlighted with white paint. A head covering made of applied light-coloured fibrous material, possibly wool or plant fibre, is present. A section of multi-coloured woven textile is draped around the torso. The figure holds a slender, natural-wood staff in its right hand. A small, modern red wooden novelty sign is suspended from the hand and staff by a thin wire; the sign is printed in white capital letters with the text THIS IS AS MERRY AS WE GET. There are no maker's marks, signatures, or labels visible on the figure or its integral base.
