Other Notes: This painting, with its rare freedom of construction, inaugurates one of Fernand Leger's most productive periods. Douglas Cooper writes: ”In 1927, as if in reaction to his own self-discipline, Leger inaugurated the large series of paintings known under the generic name of Objects in Space. Gradually, he traded the monument for the living.” The architectural elements disappear, replaced by scattered objects that play with each other, and the space they inhabit is evoked by their forward projection and by the play of background colors. Well-matched chromatic values connect these scattered objects, or else analogous or opposing rhythms, or finally connecting lines that wander through the whole. Leger places his objects at the necessary distance, and the law of chords and rhythms ensures that they remain there. The secret of this art, if there is one, lies in the sensitivity and mastery of the creator. For Leger mobilizes considerable science to create this new space, where the play of chords and rhythms is singularly delicate and perilous. A pipe, a tree, a cogwheel, an accordion of keys, a straw hat or a pair of dancers—all have their own role to play.
