STONEWARE JAR WITH FISH AND OWL - Probably Muskingum County, Ohio, 3rd quarter-19th century. Four-gallon ovoid jar with lug handles; on one side is an incised fish and on the other is an incised owl and an incised bird in flight. 13.5” high. Provenance: a Gallipolis, Ohio collection. The owl bears a strong resemblence in its folksy execution to the owls on the monumental cooler probably originally made for S.D. Buckwalter of Ross County that was sold in March 2016 by Crocker Farm (Maryland). The likely origin is Muskingum County, where stoneware was decorated with incised owls by multiple potters, including Riley Bratton of Newton Township, Joshua German of Hopewell Township, and Daniel Sowers of Brush Creek Township.
