FRANCIS G. SALLAS (OHIO, ACT. 1830S): PAIR OF PORTRAITS - Pencil/graphite on paper, signed on the back. Profile portrait of a well-dressed husband and wife; he is in a black coat with a frilly cravat, and she's wearing a large tortoiseshell hair comb and earrings. Matted and framed. 9.25” high, 7.25” wide (sight); 15” high, 13” wide (overall). She is signed on the back by Sallas and dated 1831, while on his portrait, dated 1832, Sallas noted the location: Richmond, Indiana. Lots 26, 27, and 28 are believed to be a family group. Reference: Kern, Kern, Warwick, Warwick in ”Four Ohio Nineteenth Century Folk Artists” (Magazine Antiques, August, 2007). Provenance: private collection. Condition: He has some minor tissue repairs at the margins, both are lightly toned and are tissue-hinged to backing board.
