W.A. HILDRETH (AMERICAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY): BUCOLIC LANDSCAPE - Possibly Ohio, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1875 lower left, and dated on the back. Pastoral landscape with a bridge over a creek, and a small cottage in the background. Period frame. 11.25” high, 17.25” wide (sight); 15.5” high, 21.5” wide (overall). Provenance: a Gallipolis, Ohio collection. Geneaological research has identified a potential candidate for the artist in Wells A. Hildreth, born in Knox County, Ohio in 1834, but had moved to Union County by 1861, where he married, raised his family, and remained the rest of his life. Condition: Yellowed varnish.
