LICKING COUNTY, OHIO SAMPLER - Louisa Atwood, St. Albans, c. 1820, silk on linen. Alphabet and number lines and ”Louisa Atwood daughter of Jonathan and Mary Atwood was born Wear 3rd Feb AD 182 [sic]?” 15.25” high, 13” wide (sight); 18” high, 15.75” wide (overall). Louisa (1801-1864) was born to Jonathan and Mary in Weare, New Hampshire. By 1820, the family had come west, settling in St. Albans, Licking County. Louisa married John Biggs (1790-1860) and the couple had nine children. At some point between 1850 and 1860, they moved further west, to Wyandot County, where both Louisa and John died and are buried. Provenance: an Ohio collection. Condition: Unfinished, even toning, early patched loss on the right (the black spot).
