PAIR OF WATERCOLOR LANDSCAPES - American, 19th century. View of a riverside castle at night, titled ”Moonlight, ” in a period frame, 7.25” high, 8.25” wide (overall); and a riverside landscape, inscribed below ”Beneath a Mountain's Brow / The most remote & inaccessible by shepherds trod / A hermit lived / Trag Douglas, ” in a period frame, 7.5” high, 8.75” wide (overall). Though framed differently, they are clearly by the same hand. A note on the back suggests that they came from a songbook. The poem in the second is from an 18th-century tragedy by Douglass.
