PORTRAIT OF A LADY BY HENRY WALTON (NEW YORK, 1804-1865) - Oil on canvas, signed on the back ”Painted by H. Walton Dryden 1845.” Half-length seated portrait of a middle-aged woman in black, with a bonnet and shawl, and holding a bible open to the Song of Solomon. In its original mahogany-veneered frame, 28.5” high, 24.5” wide (sight); 38” high, 33.25” wide (overall). Provenance: private collection. While his birth and death dates vary according to source, Walton is known to have worked mostly in New York until he went west in search of gold in California. In April 2024, Pook and Pook (Downingtown, PA) sold a pair of portraits by Walton with a similar inscription, locating that couple in McLean, NY, only a few miles from Dryden, Thompkins County, NY where the sitter here was from.
