CIVIL WAR ESCUTCHEON FOR 1ST SARGEANT JAMES JOHNSON, PENNSYLVANIA - Watercolor and ink on paper. Eagle over a shield representing Johnson's ranks, units, and service. In its original frame, 25.75” high, 17.5” wide (sight); 32.75” high, 24.75” wide (overall). Provenance: private collection. James C. Johnson mustered into Company E (The Easton Guards) as a corporal in the 12th Pennsylvania Volunteers (aka the 41st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry) shortly after the attack on Fort Sumter. During his three years of service, Johnson saw considerable action, including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spotsvlvania, and Cold Harbor.
