CARVED PORTRAIT OF A NATIVE AMERICAN - Carl Dietl, Logansport, Indiana, 1932, cherry. High relief profile bust with wonderful details. 16” high, 12” wide. Provenance: private collection. Carl Anthony Dietl was born in Logansport, Indiana, on Jan. 14, 1896 to Joseph and Dora, and was the second oldest of five children. His father operated a drill press, and the boys seem to have followed their father into work. Joseph died in the influenza epidemic in the winter of 1918, after developing pneumonia. Records indicate that Carl was serving in the Army at the time, and he was discharged the following year after one year of service. Census records seem to indicate that the three oldest boys remained with their mother, living in Logansport and supporting her by working in railroad-adjacent jobs, until her death in 1947. Carl died on Jan. 11, 1965. Condition: Retains its original finish.
