OHIO PIECED STARBURST QUILT - Ohio, mid-19th century, cotton. A handstitched quilt with sixteen large pieced starburst designs in dark red and brown printed fabrics. 98” by 96”. Provenance: The Virginia Gunn Collection, Wooster, Ohio. Dr. Gunn purchased this quilt from dealer Stephen Sheran at the Hudson Antique Show in 2017. A handwritten note is attached to the reverse naming the orignal owner of the quilt as General John Johnson Elwell (1820-1900) of Cleveland, Ohio, a medical doctor in the Union Army . Elwell married Nancy Chittenden in 1846 and it is believed that Nancy made this quilt for her husband.
