WESTERN PA OR WEST VIRGINIA STONEWARE ”PEOPLE” JAR - Probably Uniontown, Pennsylvania or Morgantown, West Virginia, c. 1860. Four-gallon, with incised bands, and with a lady standing between two small trees. 14? high. Stoneware jars with cobalt figures such as this are typically considered distinctive of the Upper Ohio Valley potteries of either David Greenland Thompson of Morgantown, WV, John Greenland of Connellsville, PA, or his brother, Norval Greenland, of Uniontown. The capacity mark on this jar does not have the beaded surround often seen on other ?people jars, ? but is clearly a product of one of these potters. The lady depicted is delineated in much the same manner as several examples illustrated in Duez, Horvath, and Hornsby-Heindl, ?The Stoneware Years of the Thompson Potters of Morgantown, West Virginia, 1854?1890,? in Ceramics in America (Milwaukee: Chipstone Foundation, 2011).
