MODEL OF THE PACKET BOAT CAPE GIRARDEAU - Wellsburg, West Virginia, 1960s, painted, wood, wire, thread, brass. A handmade, detailed scale model of a sternwheel packet boat with corresponding information. 11” high, 36” long, 6.5” wide. A note with the model reads, ”Packet boat ”Cape Girardeau” built at Jeffersonville, Ind. in 1923. Ran out of St. Louis on the Mississippi until 1935 when she was sold to the Greene Line of Cincinnati, for a tour boat. She was renamed the ”Gordon C. Greene, ” was also remodeled. She passed here many times going to or from Pittsburgh. This model shows her when she was first built in 1923.” The model was made by a man who worked security at the Eagle Manufacturing Plant in Wellsburg, WV. He said he enjoyed watching the paddle wheel boats ply up and down the Ohio when he was a kid. Sometime in the 1960s he began making models of the riverboats he saw. He made about 5 total, which he later sold, donated, and gave away. Provenance: an Ohio collection. PLEASE NOTE OUR SHIPPING PROCESS.
