DECORATED BLANKET CHEST - Mid-19th century, pine and poplar. Dovetailed box with turned feet, and retaining its original faux mahogany grain paint with green trim. Early ink-stamped names on the till and lid include Harriet Michael, Mary Michael, and Henry P. Michael. 23” high, 37.75” wide, 21” deep. The names on this chest point to the Henry William Michael family of Middletown, Maryland. Henry W. Michael (1813-1907) married Sophia Biser (1814-1863) and they had at least eight children, including Mary E. Michael (b. 1838) and Henry P. Michael (1842-1916), before the family moved to Madison County, Indiana, in the mid-1850s. Sophia died in 1863, and the following year, Henry W. Michael married Harriet Kinneman. The Michael children had several half-siblings as a result of this marriage, including Harriet C. Michael, who was born in 1869.Provenance: a northeast Ohio collection.
