OHIO POTTERY DOG - Bob Wilson, Crooksville/Roseville, Ohio, c. 1940. Slip-cast, seated mastiff with brown glaze, signed in cobalt on the underside. 8” high. Bobbie Dale Wilson (b. 1918) is listed in the 1940 census as a ”mold carrier” in a pottery. His WWII draft card lists him living in Crooksville but working at the Brush Pottery in Roseville. Another such dog, illustrated in Richmond, A Tradition of Progress: Ohio Decorative Arts, 1860-1945, p. 33, was made by Edmund Tague, whose father co-founded the Crooksville Art Pottery (later the Crooksville China Company). Tague, prior to relocating to Washington D.C., worked in the pottery business. It is possible that the molds for these dogs (there are two sizes) moved around the area among different potteries from the early to mid-20th century. Provenance: a West Virginia collection.
