NEW JERSEY JACQUARD COVERLET - Bergen Co., New Jersey, 1848. A jacquard coverlet in indigo and white. Centerfield contains a large x of roses and plumes around an unusual sunburst, surrounded by scattered flowers and scrolled leaves. Wide border with flower baskets/urns and scrolled foliage and flowers, above a band of grape or fig leaves. Bottom corner blocks signed with customer name ”MARIA VAN BUSSUM 1848.” Top corner blocks contain scrolled leaves, flowers, hearts, and grapes. Fringed on bottom without center seam. Maria Van Bussum (1812-1892) was born in New Jersey to a family whose Dutch ancestors had come to America generations before. In 1831 she married Solomon Bogert, a farmer and later a wealthy ”provision dealer.” They had 10 children. Maria died suddenly at age 79, and Solomon followed two years later. 89” long, 67” wide w/o fringe. Provenance: The Collection of the late Dr. Virginia Gunn, Wooster, Ohio.
