TWO COVERLETS - Two coverlets: the first, Coshocton Co., Ohio, c. 1840s. Attributed to D. White. A jacquard coverlet in blue and white. Centerfield with foliate star in grid offset with floral medallions with sunflowers or poppies. Border with poppies and foliage, doubled on sides. Corner blocks signed ”D.L WEST CARLISLE OHIO.” Fringed on three sides. Two sides not joined at center seam. David Lawson (c. 1790-1862) was active in West Carlisle, an uncorporated community in Pike Twp, from around 1843 through the 1850 census. Most of his children and grandchildren became doctors, pharmacists, and dentists in the area. 85” long, each side 39” wide (approx. 78” wide total) w/o fringe; together with a signed and dated coverlet: American, 1845. A jacquard coverlet in indigo and white. Centerfield features rows of 32-point compass roses offset by birds among flowers and acorns. Greek key borders inside and out. Side borders contain distelfink (birds and rose trees). Bottom border contains grapevine. Corner blocks signed ”John Geiser (difficult to read, possibly a customer name) 45.” Formerly fringed on three sides with center seam. 94” long, 65” wide w/o fringe.
