TWO OHIO COVERLETS - Ashland Co. and Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, 1842 and 1848. Two jacquard coverlets: the first in red, green, light and dark blue, and white. Centerfield with rose and blossom motifs, with filler of small stars, polka dots, and diamonds. Border with foliage and ”LIBERTY.” Corner blocks inscribed ”ASHLAND WM MCCLELLAN 1842,” with blank space for customer name. William McClellan wove coverlets in Nankin, Ashland Co., Ohio from 1839-1847. Fringed on three sides, with center seam. 81” long, 71” wide; together with a coverlet in gold, red, indigo, and white. Centerfield with curling leaf medallions in octagonal tiles, spaced with leaves and offset snowflakes. Side borders have roses and grapevines. Bottom border has potted roses. Corner blocks inscribed ”Wm McClellan Orange 1848.” Had fringe on three sides. With center seam. 84” long, 75” wide w/o fringe. Cuyahoga County coverlet: Significant fringe loss, especially along bottom. Some repaired and patched holes. Center seam with hole, warping. Some weave loss. Overall minor discoloration. Center seam repaired with newer binding.
