TWO JACQUARD COVERLETS - American, mid-19th century. Two jacquard coverlets: the first in green, red, indigo, and white. Centerfield of four medallions with leafy cross surrounded by large leaf wreath. Center of wreath contains a rosette with hearts. Borders contain a wavy design spaced with hearts and the occasional letter H. Corner blocks with unusual motif of curling leaf sunburst and Maltese cross. Fringed three sides, with center seam. Attributed to C. Hefner, who signed another coverlet with location ”CBETOWN.” 82” long, 72” wide w/o fringe; togethrer with a coverlet in pink, indigo, and white. Centerfield with rows of tulip wheels in a fern wreath and star crosses. Side borders have double town/factory border. Bottom border has eagles and trees above a row of 8-point stars. Single corner block, inscribed ”PHILIP HEFNER WAYNE COUNTY PERRY TOWNSHIP OHIO 184[6 OR 8?].” Fringed on two sides with center seam. 71” long, 63” wide w/o fringe. Provenance: The Collection of the late Dr. Virginia Gunn, Wooster, Ohio. Overall wear and weave losses. Discolored. Several repairs, especially along center seam. Top and bottom edges warped.
