TWO JACQUARD COVERLETS - American, mid-19th century. Two jacquard coverlets in blue and white, the first: centerfield consists of tulip wheel medallions offset with leafy crosses and 'hearts with eyeballs.' Borders have floral vines. Corner blocks unsigned with flower pots. Fringed on two sides, with oddly placed center seam. 84” long, 51” wide w/o fringe; together with a coverlet with a centerfield with a floral cross surrounded by floral and star wreath, offset with a tulip and lily wheel around a starburst. Border have floral vines. Corner blocks unsigned with flower pots. Fringed on three sides. 88” long, 66” wide w/o fringe. Provenance: The Collection of the late Dr. Virginia Gunn, Wooster, Ohio. Condition: Tulip wheel medallions coverlet: Overall toning. Significant fringe loss. Oddly placed center seam indicates that a central portion may have been removed and the remaining edge sewn to center seam. Inconsistent blue shades possibly indicate a bad dye batch. Wear along upper and lower edges. Floral Cross coverlet: Minor staining. Significant fringe loss, mostly along bottom border. Warping along fold lines. Very good color.
