HURON CO., OHIO JACQUARD COVERLETS - Huron Co., Ohio. Two jacquard coverlets: the first in indigo and white. Centerfield contains plume medallions with crossed palmetto fans. Double side borders with thistles, stars, and ”Ohio.” Bottom border with distelfink (birds and trees). Corner blocks inscribed ”Franklin Sawyer Dekalb, Maid by C Wiggens Fancy Weaver.” With center seam and fringe on one side (formerly on three sides, now gone). Charles Wiggens was weaving in Monroeville, Huron Co., Ohio c. 1850. He worked and lived with cloth factory owner Richard Bennett, and usually signed his coverlets secondary to Bennett. The customer was probably Franklin Sawyer (1825-1892), a prominent attorney from nearby Norwalk. In 1850, he was elected prosecuting attorney of Huron County. In 1861, he would enlist in the Civil War as a Captain in the Eighth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He achieved the rank of Brevet Brigadier General before he was mustered out in 1865 due to serious wounds at the Battles of Gettysburg and Spotsylvania. After the war, he was elected to the Ohio State Legislature. 80” long, 70” wide w/o fringe; together with a coverlet in gold, red, and white. Centerfield with a combination of tulip crosses, double roses, and snowflakes. Double side borders with thistles. Double bottom border with thistles and swags. Corner blocks inscribed ”Manufactured by R Bennett, Monroeville, Huron Co., Ohio 1851” and ”Frances M Tucker, Wove by C Wiggens.” ”C Wiggens” also inscribed along bottom edge. Without center seam. Fringed on three sides. Frances Symes Tucker (1819-1888) lived on a farm eight miles away, with her husband, Erasmus, and four children. One child was born the same year the coverlet was made. Frances and Erasmus would go on to have a fifth child in 1854, a year before Erasmus died. None of their children had children of their own, so the Tucker line died out. 82” long, 66” wide w/o fringe. Provenance: The Collection of the late Dr. Virginia Gunn, Wooster, Ohio. Tucker coverlet: Large stain on front, and scattered throughout. Some fringe loss. Tear along bottom edge. Top edge puckered. Warped along fold lines. Small holes. Some weave breakage at top.
