WAYNE CO., OHIO JACQUARD COVERLETS ATTRIB./SIGNED A. JOSEPH SIEGENTHALER, OHIO - American, mid-19th century, wool and cotton. Two jacquard coverlets: the first in pink, indigo, and white. Centerfield with floral medallions in octagonal boxes, offset by blossoms in squares. Side borders contain tulips and strawberries. Bottom border contains curling stems and blossoms. Corner blocks have fan-like trademarks. Fringed on three sides, with center seam. Another coverlet with this pattern and border is signed by Alfred Joseph Siegenthaler (1830-1899). Censuses list him as a weaver in Wooster from 1860-1880, but all surviving coverlets are dated 1858. During the Civil War, he was a Private in the 20th Ohio Artillery. 82” long, 75” wide w/o fringe; together with a coverlet in light pink, yellow, indigo, and white. Centerfield with floral medallions in octagonal tiles and a block lattice layout. Side borders contain tulips and strawberries. Bottom border contains curling stems and blossoms. Corner blocks inscribed ”Wove by A J Siegent-Haleb Wooster Ohio 1858.” Fringed on three sides, with center seam. 71” long, 68” wide w/o fringe.
