PORTRAIT OF AN OHIO CHILD - Unsigned, c. 1865, oil on canvas. Oval portrait of Netta Ganzman, about age 4, in three-quarter length, wearing a red dress and holding flowers. 25” high, 20” wide (sight); in an older frame, 33.5” high, 31.5” wide. Netta Ganzman was born in Tuscarawas County in 1861 to Martha McCullough, the daughter of a successful local farmer, and Charles Ganzman, a German-born craftsman who identified through the years on census records as a watchmaker, a jeweler, and a locksmith. Netta married Llwellyn Houk (sometimes Honk) in 1884, and they had at least three daughters. In 1899, Nettie gave birth to their third daughter, Leah, on Sept. 26, 1899, and then seemingly she disappears from historical records. By spring of 1902, Llwellyn (Lee) Houk has remarried. However, a small note in the Twin City News on Aug. 23, 1900, indicates that Mrs. L.W. Houk of the Stillwater community died and was buried in Union Cemetery, where we also find a record for the grave of Jennette Houk, died Aug. 18, 1900. Provenance: an Ohio collection.
