MARKED WROUGHT-RON HOE - Marked ”OLIVER,” 19th century. 8” by 6”. Found in North Carolina and purportedly used by a enslaved man named Oliver, who was referenced in a couple of ”runaway” ads placed by Stephen Sneed in the Virginia Gazette and Petersburg Intellegincer in 1798. There was also an ad for ”runaway” Oliver (a blacksmith) in Fairfax County, Virginia in the Virginia Herald in May of 1809, and a Jefferson County, (West) Viriginia deed of of trust lists an Oliver (blacksmith) in 1807-8.
