COUNTRY CHAIR OR BRETTSTUHL - Probably Ohio, 2nd quarter-19th century, walnut and ash. Plank back and seat, with splayed legs. 37” high. This unusual chair form is of German extract and came to the US with German immigrants beginning in the 18th century. They first appear in southeastern Pennsylvania, but show up later in the Midwest. Being walnut, this is likely one of the Midwestern examples, probably from one of Ohio's other Germanic communities. Provenance: an Ohio collection.
