EARLY BIBLE WITH PENNSYLVANIA FRAKTUR BOOKPLATE - Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Early 19th century German language Bible (missing title page) with a watercolor bookplate on the ffep for Samuel Schnebele, dated 1830. 7” high, 4” wide. This fraktur can be tied to the Annville area by two others: one in the Henry S. Borneman collection, also published in Pennsylvania German Bookplates (1935), appears as #699 in The Pennsylvania German Fraktur of The Free Library of Philadelphia, which is for Catharina Schally, dated 1825, and is nearly identical to this one, and one for Anna Fimann (Fiehman), #777, dated 1822. Both are listed as by an unidentified maker in southeastern PA, but genealogical research on the three names ties them all to the Annville area. Johann Schnebele settled in the Annville area of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania in the early 18th century, and over the intervening years, Schnebele became Schnebeli, Schnabel, Schnally, Snavely, and a number of other variations. His descendant, Samuel Snavely was born in January of 1805 to Johannes and Veronica Snavely. He married Hannah Clark (1811-1897), and they had at least five children. Samuel lived until 1884, and the census records him as a laborer, fence maker, and tollkeeper across the decades. Provenance: from an Indiana collection.
