COUNTRY CHAIR OR BRETTSTUHL - Possibly Zoar, Ohio, mid-19th century, pine. Plank back and seat, with splayed legs. 41” high. This unusual chair form is of German extract and came to the US with German immigrants beginning in the 18th century. They first appear in southeastern Pennsylvania, but show up later in the Midwest, including in Zoar, where they seemed to be fairly popular in the early days of the society. Provenance: Keeping House Bed and Breakfast, Zoar, Ohio; ex Gristmill Antiques (Ohio); ex Jim Harris (Ohio); purchased from a collector in New Lexington, Ohio.
