Bidspirit auction | ILLINOIS STENCILED FAMILY RECORD
ILLINOIS STENCILED FAMILY RECORD - C. 1885, made for James Jeffries and his family, with elaborate, bold, and colorful stenciled decoration, including peacocks, hearts, stars, and flowers. In a period frame, 19” high, 21” wide. Jeffries (1854-1926) was born in Greenup County, Kentucky. He moved to Illinois, living briefly in Richland County, where he was listed as a farmhand in the 1880 census. There he married Nancy Johnson, and the couple soon returned to Kentucky, living in Casey County, having at least two children. This record is one of a few known made by the same Illinois artist in the 1870s and 1880s, and was likely gifted to the couple before their return to Kentucky. Provenance: an Ohio collection.
