Bidspirit auction | DECORATED STONEWARE CROCK

DECORATED STONEWARE CROCK - Northeastern US, 1860-1880. 5-gallon crock with applied handles, cobalt bird, and impressed ”J.H. GRIFFIN 190 CENTRAL SQ DOVER NH.” 12” high. J.H. Griffin seems likely to have been John Herman McDaniel Griffin, born in 1854 in Dedham, Massachusetts. As a young man, his father moved the family to East Kingston, New Hampshire, where the family appears on the census in 1870. By 1880, his father was a farmer, his older brother was working as a retail grocer, and John was a ?clerk in store, ? possibly his brother?s. In 1888, John married Abigail Goodwin Bartlett, and by 1890, he was operating a hardware store in Newmarket, New Hampshire. He and Abbie would have at least three children. After her death in 1923, John appears to have begun traveling, even going to Egypt, until his death in 1940 in Newmarket. Provenance: an Ohio collection.
