Bidspirit auction | THREE WALLPAPER BANDBOXES
THREE WALLPAPER BANDBOXES - American, 19th century. The larger box with blue wallpaper is lined with 1840s Harrisburg, Pennsylvania newspaper (with great content, including 1848 election, railroad, Mormons, canals, dentist, daguerreotypes), 10.5” high, 14” long; a medium box with original label for Henry Cushing & Co., manufacturer of and dealer in paper hangings and bandboxes, Providence, Rhode Island, 5.5” high, 12” long; and the smallest box, 4.5” high, 8.5” long. Eliza Cross Stevens was born in 1812 in Bath, Maine, to William Stevens and Rebecca Bacon. Eliza?s older sister, Catharine Whittemore Stevens (1805-1878), who married Steven Perry (1796-1870), a successful merchant, in Natick, Massachusetts in 1825, and their daughter Catherine Emma Perry (1825-1904) married James Earl Butts, Jr. (1824-1882), in Providence, Rhode Island about 1844. They had three children, the youngest of whom was a daughter, Catherine Stevens Butts, born in 1860, who went by Kate, the K.S. Butts on the note. Eliza Cross Stevens was Catherine Stevens Butts?s sister, or K.S. Butts?s great aunt. Eliza never married, and in fact, in the 1860 census, Eliza, age 40, is living in Steven and Catharine Perry?s household in Watertown, Massachusetts, where James Butts and his family, including two-month-old Kate, are also living. After Steven Perry?s death, both Catharine Whittemore and Eliza Stevens were living with Catharine?s daughter Catherine Butts in 1870. Eliza died in 1885 (although there seems to be some confusion because she was reinterred in 1891), and Kate, who married William Pitt Durfee, died in 1951. Provenance: an Ohio collection.
