FERDINAND BRADER (1833-1901), PORTRAIT OF AN OHIO FARM - ”Residence of Henry and Anna Ream, Plain Tp. Stark Co. Ohio 1890,” graphite on paper, signed lower right and numbered 763. A large and ”full” example of Brader's farm portraits, with a house, barn, other outbuildings, numerous figures, animals (including turkeys, cows, pigs, a dog, and rabbits), multiple pieces of farming equipment (including a steam tractor), and a train in the background. 33” high, 49.75” wide (drawing); in a modern frame with museum glass, 39” high, 55.5” wide (overall). Henry Ream (1823-1906) was born in Stark County to Pennsylvania-born parents who had immigrated to Ohio shortly after statehood in 1803. He married Anna Oberlin (1827-1907), and they had at least ten children. In addition to being a very successful and respected farmer, Ream also seems to have occasionally worked as an auctioneer. This large and complex composition includes some classic Brader, such as the running rabbits in the distant field and the horse droppings in the road, as well as some lesser included images, including the train and the steam tractor. Overall, Brader depicts this clearly prosperous farm in exceptional detail--the fields, garden, outbuilding, the beautiful home, and the place is a beehive of activity. The Ream farm was located between what is now Canton and North Canton (on 44th St. NW, near Cleveland Ave.). This drawing was included in in the landmark exhibition ”The Legacy of Ferdinand A. Brader” by Kathleen Wieschaus-Voss et all, at the Canton Museum of Art, 2014-2025, and is illustrated in the accompanying catalog as entry 49. Provenance: this drawing has remained in the Ream family since its creation.
