TABLE STAND BY JOHN SHEARER, MARTINSBURG (WEST) VIRGINIA - 1790-1820, walnut. Molded top over a shaped skirt, and on tapered legs ending in stout spade feet. 28.5” high, 18.5” wide, 18” deep. Known best for the unusual inlaid motifs and inscriptions on his furniture that proclaim his fierce loyalty to England (long after the American Revolution), John Shearer is still a somewhat enigmatic figure. He primarily worked in the Martsinburg area of Virginia, now West Virginia, and his surviving furniture often incorporates quirks, such as sideways-mounted brass pulls, in addition to inscriptions. The present stand is simple but classic Shearer. The profiles of the top edge and the skirt match other table stands, and the distinctive spade feet are the same as Shearer used on a variety of tables and stands.
