OHIO PIECED QUILT - Sabra Ward Outcalt, Morgan County, 1890s, cotton. Stylized floral pattern with printed red and white fabric, handsewn, including elaborate quilting. 78.75” by 76.5”. Attached is an early note reading, ”This quilt was made for Ernest Yocum by his great grandmother Sabra Outcalt.” Sabra Delilah Ward (1815-1901) was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, and married Hiram Outcalt (1807-1896) in 1833 in Portage County. Their oldest daughter was Mary Henrietta (1836-1916), who married George Hiram Coulson (1835-1864) in 1856. Mary and George would have three children before his death in the Atlanta Campaign of the Civil War in 1864. Their youngest child, Theresa Marie Coulson (1862-1953), would marry Eli Yocom (1862-1929) in Morgan County. The Yocoms moved from Morgan County to Lorain County sometime between 1900 and 1910, where Eli founded a dry-cleaning company in 1907, and their second son, Ernest George Yocom, attended Oberlin College, served in World War I, and worked in the family business. Sabra Outcalt lived in Morgan County until her death in Stockport in 1901. Ernest was born in 1889, so it seems likely to assume that this is a Morgan County quilt from the 1890s that ended up in northeast Ohio as part of the Appalachian migration.
