Bidspirit auction | OHIO CHARACTER JUG OF GEORGE
OHIO CHARACTER JUG OF GEORGE WASHINGTON - Sydney Starkey, c. 1892. Slip-molded jug depicting a bust of Washington in a cocked hat. 9.25” high. Joseph Sydney Wood Starkey (1852-1938) was an English-born potter who, in 1892, received a patent for a ”vase...representing the head of George Washington” (pat. 21,877, October 4, 1892). The ”vase” is really a character jug, modeled after the character jugs made by Doulton and others since the 18th century. While Starkey's Washington jugs are somewhat scarce, they have been found white (as is the case here), and some have enameled hats with gold lettering, and other variations have been documented. It is believed that he intended on producing these for sale at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Provenance: an Ohio collection.
