Bidspirit auction | PORTRAIT OF A CINCINNATI, OHIO
PORTRAIT OF A CINCINNATI, OHIO HOME - ”Residence of Mr. L. Royal Northside, O.” and signed ”C. Murray 06” in the lower right. Pencil and watercolor portrait of a gray house with red roof. In an antique frame, 12” high, 15” wide. Leman (sometimes Leaman) Warden Royal was born in 1867 in Ellsworth, Maine, and he married Emma Wood in 1886. The 1900 census records have him in the area of Bluefield, Mercer County, West Virginia, where he is listed as a railroad engineer, and perhaps it was the railroad that lead the Royals to Cincinnati, where a 1904 city directory has Leman living at 4229 Turrill St., in the area just north of the railroad tracks, which was annexed by Cincinnati in the 1870s and locally known as Northside. In 1910, he was working as a factory foreman in a soap factory, and later, he owned and operated a gas station. He died in 1947. Provenance: an Ohio collection.
