Bidspirit auction | HOLMES COUNTY, OHIO COVERLET

HOLMES COUNTY, OHIO COVERLET - Rooster corner block with ”BERLIN HOLMES CO. 1849.” Red, blue, green, and natural, with floral design and rose border. 89” by 73”. Attached to one corner is an early note reading, ”Mrs. Soloman Farver and Mary her daughter spun the yarn for Coverlet.” Solomon William Farver (1816-1895) married Barbara Conrad in 1837, and they had at least two children, including their daughter Mary, who was born in 1838. The Farvers appear to have lived their entire lives in Holmes County, in Holmes County, Ohio, listed as a wealthy Ohio-born farmer, and married to Barbara, with a daughter Mary, who is 23. Mary would have been born around 1837. The 1850 non-population census records show that the Farvers had 35 sheep and 60 pounds of wool on hand. Provenance: an Ohio collection.
