The bronze statue was found in the Dyonisostheater in Athens, the marble copy of which is now kept in the Vatican Museums; its discovery was the impetus for the foundation of the Lateran Museum in Rome, which is why the statue bears the name Typus Lateran, depiction of Sophocles in toga, next to a vessel with rolled papers, on a round plinth, slightly rubbed and minimally verdigris, h 48 cm.
