Geschnitztes Figurenpaar - Geschnitztes Figurenpaar Italien, um 1600, Laubholz massiv, mehrfarbig gefasst und teils reich vergoldet, vollplastische Darstellung des frühchristlichen Zwillingspärchens Cosmas und Damian als stehende Ganzfiguren auf abgerundeter Plinthe, der Legende nach handelt es sich bei den Brüdern um Heilkundige, die Kranke unentgeltlich behandelten und viele von diesen zum Christentum bekehrten, daraufhin als Märtyrer hingerichtet und später als Heilige verehrt, sie gelten als Schutzpatrone von medizinischen Fakultäten und einer Vielzahl medizinischer Berufe wie etwa Bader, Ammen, Ärzte, Apotheker, wurmstichig, minimale oberflächliche Substanzverluste, H 75 und 81 cm. Carved pair of figures Italy, c. 1600, solid hardwood, polychromed and partly richly gilded, a fully sculpted depiction of the early Christian twin brothers Cosmas and Damian as standing full-length figures on a rounded plinth; according to legend, the brothers were healers who who treated the sick free of charge and converted many of them to Christianity; they were subsequently executed as martyrs and later venerated as saints. They are regarded as the patron saints of medical faculties and a wide range of medical professions, such as barbers, midwives, doctors and pharmacists. The figures show signs of worm damage and minimal superficial loss of material; heights 75 and 81 cm.
