Fascinating Letter!! By Maran the Gaon Rabbi Ovadya Yosef Indicating His Admiration for the Lubavitcher Rebbe and His Inexhaustible Love of Books . - את התשע לירות הנותרים ימסרם לאחי נעים [the remaining nine Lirot should be given to my brother Naim in the kiosk], with these words, Maran begins his letter to Rabbi Yosef Cohen who was responsible for purchasing books for Maran. Later, Maran asks that to be informed of a any important book that was republished despite what his what had said on the subject since he purcahses the books with the money of Ma'asser Ksafim, which anyhow does not help support the household: אם יש איזה ספר חשוב שיצא לאור מחדש, נא להודיעני, ואל ישים לב למה שדיברה אשתי בעניין, כי בין כה וכה, אינני יכול ולא רשאי לוותר על מעשר כספים ומהם אני קונה את הספרים, ובכן מובן שלא יעזור ד”ז כלל לבית. Maran also notes that the previous year he had sent the Lubavitcher Rebbe two sections of Yabia Omer and Chazon Ovadya. The books were sent via Rabbi Azriel Slonim and Maran did not yet receive the Rebbe's comments. The letter indicates Maran's reverence to the Rebbe and his yearning to receive his response. In addition, Maran notes that in return, he was promised the Shut Tzemach Tzeddek, which he has also not yet received. The letter also refers to Rabbi Zwein. Appearing in the book Chachmei Hamizrach VeHaRebbe MiLubavitch, p. 460, is the Rebbe instruction to send Maran the book: ”צריך שיגיעו בפרט לאלו במורין הלכה בפועל והשפעה שלהם בסביבה” [it should especially be given to those who teach halacha in practice and influence their surroundings]. On p. 464 [ibid.], there is a letter Maran enclosed with the books and the Rebbe's confirmation that he received them. The Rebbe notes that he heard that Maran had already received Chassidic books in return and that surely, he shall study them: ”כי בוודאי יקבע בהם שיעור לימוד בכל הדרוש וכו” . The Rebbe ends his letter with the words: כדרכי במילי דחביבותא כגון דא, באתי באיזה הערות בשולי הגליון בעברי בין הדפים בחפזה מתאים לרשיון הזמן וכמרז”ל את והב בסופה. The Rebbe thus managed, in the days between Nissan 3 when he received the books and Nissan 27, the date of his last letter, to go through Maran's books and write comments on their margins. For some reason, the Rebbe's response did not reach Maran... To conclude: This small postcard indicates the following: * Maran's great love for books. * His custom of purchasing them with the money of Me'asrot despite his difficult financial siutaion. * The surprising instruction regarding the Rebbetzin. * The Rebbetzin's concern to her family. * Maran's desire to receive the Rebbe's response. [1] postcard. Very good condition! For the purchaser's benefit, enclosed is the book Chachmei Hamizrach.
