'Qanun al-Nisa' (Laws for Women), first edition. Baghdad, 1906. Gilded ink. 'Qanun al-Nisa'—laws for women, ethical teachings, and prayers—written in the Arabic dialect spoken in Baghdad by Rabbi Yosef Chaim, the 'Ben Ish Chai'. This is the first edition of a significant work; in the introduction, the author (the 'Ben Ish Chai') urges readers to review the book at least once every six months. In the homes of the pious in Baghdad, it was customary to read the book together every Sabbath; women would also gather during the intermediate days (Chol HaMoed) of Passover and Sukkot, with each woman taking turns reading a chapter aloud in a special melody. The title page lists Livorno as the place of publication, rather than Baghdad. Baghdad, 1906. [3], 149 leaves; 19.5 cm. Traces of gilding remain on the title page. The book opens with a (printed) dedication to the benefactress Mrs. Rivka Belilios of Calcutta, India. The volume concludes with sixty riddles and wise parables. Antique binding, slightly worn. Age stains and minor tears. Good condition.
