Chayei Adam and Nishmat Adam on the Shulchan Aruch Orech Chayim—early edition, Vilna and Horodna 1825, from the Strashun Library.
An important and foundational work on the Shulchan Aruch by Rabbi Avraham Danzig of Vilna, the Binat Adam and Chochmat Adam (it is said that he titled his books as such in order to prevent them from being abbreviated). Additional title page for Nishmat Adam. [4], 80, [1], 54 pages. Title page and additional pages have been professionally repaired, last pages have damage to text. Stains, overall good condition.
Inscription on the binding and stamps on the inside testifying that this book is from the library of Rabbi Matityahu Strashun in Vilna, see below. Additional stamp: “from the library of Eliyahu Sofer in Vilna.”
Rabbi Matityahu Strashun (1818-1886) was a Lithuanian rabbi, a book collector and bibliophile. He founded the Strashun library. He was the son of the well-known Talmudist, Rabbi Shmuel Strashun (the Rashash). Studied under Rabbi Yitzhak of Volozhin and Rabbi Menashe of Iliya.
