Chessed L’Avraham by Rabbi Avraham HaMalach—chassidut. First edition, Chernowitz, 1851

A foundational work of chassidut by the Admorim Rabbi Avraham HaMalach, the son of the Maggid of Mastrich, and Rabbi Avraham of Kalisk-Tiveria. As the title page testifies, the work was brought to the printer through the order and funding of the grandson of Rabbi HaMalach, the Admor Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin, who also gave a warm endorsement for the book. According to the date on the book, the whole process must have taken place about a month before Rabbi Yisrael’s death. There are additional divrei torah provided by other tzaddikim, as well as hanhagot by Rabbi Shalom Shachna ben Rabbi Avraham HaMalach, the Ma’aseh HaMishkan by Rabbi Shmuel Kominker, “Biur Eser Sefirot al Derech HaAvodah” and “Matzdik Echad Talmid HaTzaddik HaKadosh Av Beit Din of Berdichev” [the second edition already notes that the person referred to is none other than the Admor HaZaken, the Alter Rebbe, the Tanya of Liady]. First edition, [2], 40 pages. Stefanski Chassidut 226. Important endorsements by: the sons of the publisher (Rav Yisrael of Ruzhin), the Admorim Rabbi Shalom Yosef and Rabbi Avraham Yaakov of Sadigura, and an additional one by Rabbi Mordechai of Chernobyl. Water stains, additional stains, first pages are torn at the edges with no damage to the text, tape from the inside to reinforce the binding, generally good condition.

Writings of Rabbi Avraham HaMalach (the son of the Maggid of Mastrich) were buried in his grandson’s geniza and were taken from him by the police when he was sent to prison in Kiev, and despite his best efforts they could not be found to his chagrin, and he was not at peace until a true copy was brought to him that had been in the hands of his father-in-law the Admor Rabbi Aharon of Chernobyl, which is when he ordered that they be printed, togheter with writings by Rabbi Avraham of Kalisk and Rabbi Baruch of Mezhibozh. The warm endorsements alludes to this story, and the book was printed about a month after he had passed away.
