Sefer Knesset Yisrael on Masechet Avot—first edition, rom the author’s lifetime. Sinai publishing, Warol, 1924. Copy owned by the son-in-law of the Admor Rabbi Yeshayle of Krestirer. Additional stamps as well

Sefer Knesset Yisrael on Pirkei Avot with Rashi’s commentary, “accompanied by the work Midrash Shmuel by the Gaon Shmuel Uzido” [Rabbi Shmuel ben Rabbi Yitzhak Uzida (1555-1604), a sage of Tzfat who was close to the Ari and was rabbi of Rabbi Yosef Benvenisti]. Organized by Rabbi Yisrael Goldman, this is the first volume on the first two chapters of the masechet with two colorful title pages. Important endorsements from the Admor Ahavat Yisrael of Vizhnitz, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ullman of Bistritz, Rabbi Binyamin Fox of Grosvardin and more. Printed by Yaakov Wieder, 1924 in Warol. [6], 111, [2], [3], 135, [2] leaves. Binding is partially detached, stains, tape and lone tears. Overall good condition.

Interesting stamps and notes. The title page has the stamp in Latin letters of Rabbi Shmuel Gross of Krola from when he resided in Barbarest—he was the son in law of Rabbi Yeshayla of Krestirer (see below). Note: “Bsd Avigdor a descendant of Yaakov Greenwald, 2nd of Kislev 1926.” On the back of the title page is the stamp of the author and the publisher “Yisrael Goldman Maggid Meisharim of the Great Synagogue of Grosvardin Romania.” Handwritten note in the introduction, and an additional stamp in Latin letters on the second title page: “Rabbi Y. Klein Satmar.”

Rabbi Shmuel Gross of Krola, the “Aleh Shmuel”, was the son of Rabbi Refael of Barbarest, hy”d (1898-10th Sivan 1944) and the son-in-law of Rabbi Yeshaya Steiner, the Admor of Krestirer. He was a student of his cousin, Rabbi Haim Zvi Teitelbaum, in Sighet. In 1921 he served as Rabbi of Britshe (Bitshke) in the Zemplan district, and he was appointed rabbi and rosh yeshiva in Barbarest in place of his brother, Rabbi Yekutiel Yehuda, who moved to Sighet. Toward the end of his life he moved to Krola to serve as rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva in place of the Admor of Satmar (Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum), who moved to Satmar. He was murdered in the Shoah.
