Kesef Nivchar, 3 sections. Lemberg 1866, copy owned by Rabbi Binyamin Levin, Av Beit Din of Kolniya

“With 160 klalim found in Talmud and the words of the Rishonim and Achronim”. An important work, a kind of wide-ranging Torah encyclopedia very useful for those studying Torah. By Rabbi Baruch Bendit Gvitin. Separate title page for each section. Printed by Uri Zeev Salant, produced during the author’s lifetime. Title pages feature the year 1867 in Gregorian (in addition to the Hebrew date), something which is not feasible since the Hebrew year (5626—spread over 1865/6) could not have included that year—probably a mistake in printing. Endorsements in section 1 from Rabbi Yosef Shaul Natanson, Rabbi Shmuel Segel Landau, and Rabbi Meir Segel of Prague. Section 2 has a warm endorsement from the Chatam Sofer, and section 3 has an endorsement from Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Heller. [2], 94, 96, 51, 52 pages. Fragile paper, stains, title page and a few other pages are detached, binding detached (no spine), otherwise overall good condition.

Stamps on the first title page: “Binyamin David ben Levin, Av Beit Din of Kolniya” and additional letters in Cyrillic, additional dedication with a signature which was not checked thoroughly. Second title page has inscription: “Av Beit Din Levin.” Three title page: “Av Beit Din Kolniya.”

Rabbi Binyamin David Levin, son of Rabbi Shimshon Refael (the Shemen Sason), served as rabbi of Brezy, Kapoli, and in 1900 in Kolniya. He published articles in Torah MiZion (Jerusalem 1895-1905), Imrei Noam and Tzuf Dvash. His son was Rabbi Aryeh Dov and his son-in-law was Rabi Shaul Aryeh Zeidenberg, who brought his works into publication. He gave an endorsement to the Chafetz Haim’s book Likkutei Halachot on Masechet Zevachim.
