Gaon Rabbi Zvi Pesach Frank (1874-1961) was a great posek of his generation, a founder of the Chief Rabbinate and served as Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Jerusalem between 1936-1961. Rabbi Yaakov Kolmes (1880-1953) was rabbi of the Chabad synagogue in Moscow. In 1928 he agreed to serve as Chief Rabbi of Moscow under the Communists, and he worked in the Russian Rabbinical Council led by Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak Schneerson (the Rayatz of Lubavitch). During his reign he became a central figure of Soviet Jewry: his home was open to rabbis who were persecuted, and he was an address for students and rabbis who uncovered means of escaping the Soviet Union.
