Rabbi Gershon Lapidot (1878-1956) was a leader of the Torat Chaim yeshiva in Jerusalem. Upon the death of Rabbi Polansky he was appointed rabbi of the Beis Yisrael neighborhood, where he served until his death. He was known as a huge matmid and he studied his Talmud day and night in the Ezrat Nashim of the synagogue in the neighborhood, from which became famous his saying that in Gan Eden there would be waiting for him “a strong shtender, Shas Vilna, black coffee and cigarettes.”
