Rare segulah daf: Prayer for those sick with smallpox, handwritten by Rabbi Shlomo Michael Yonah of Torino (Italy). 18th century.

“Master of the Universe and Lord of Lords, ruler of the upper and lower worlds…protect your people and have mercy on it and on your children, the young and old, suffering from the smallpox. Please G-d remedy them and release them from their troubles…take from them your disease and tell your Angel of Death to desist…take from us and from the Jewish people all manner of illnesses…”.

A long, emotional prayer written in Italian script (pretty and uniform), handwritten by Rabbi Shlomo Michael Yonah of Torino. Title: “Prayer for those sick with smallpox, also called Vaiolum.”

Small holes, stains, written on one side of a leaf folded in four, the text is readable and clear.

Rabbi Shlomo Michael Yonah, Av Beit Din of Torino, an Italian sage of the 18th century. Brother-in-law of Rabbi Yehiel Haim Trivish, Av Beit Din of Vircelli. He first resided in Alessandria, Italy, and learned under Rabbi Eliyahu HaLevi. When HaHida came there they met one another and exchanged letters of friendship. One of the letters was a song of praise which he wrote especially for HaHida. HaHida really appreciated him and wrote very nice things about him (Encyclopedia of Italian Sages, p. 480).
