A Bible with ‘Biur’ Printed by the ‘Maskilim’ – With Mockery of the Great Rabbis. First Edition. Vilna, 1852

The books of Shmuel I and II. In Hebrew and German, two title pages in each language. The German translation was printed in St. Petersburg and bound at the end of the book from left to right, with separate title pages.

‘HaBiur’ from students of Harambamban…of Dessau”. [Moshe son of Menachem Mendelsohn, the father of the Enlightenment Movement].

On the first Hebrew title page: “Printed according to the responsa of our Rabbis and authors”. Among the names in the list of “Our Rabbis and authors” the members of the Enlightenment listed: “The deceased Rabbi R”I of Volozhin” [Rabbi Itzele of Volozhin, who died several years before] and “Rabbi Menachem of Lubavitch” [The Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch, one of the foremost opponents of the Enlightenment]. There are those who claim that this is not merely mockery, but a forgery which was intended to cause the ‘Biur’ to be used into the Jewish schools. [2], 204 leaves; 348, [4] pages. 23 cm.
