Gloss Handwritten by Rabbeinu the Yavetz on His Book She'ilat Yavetz - First Edition Altona, 1739 Fine Copy Ancient Signatures - Sefer She'ilat Yavetz, ”Bedalet Amot shel Halacha Berurah... She'elat Chacham Chatzi Teshuvah...” . The first section of the Shut book by Rabbeinu the Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Emden, the Yavetz. The famed book contains 172 Halachic responses (the Gematria of Yavetz). On leaf 163a and onwards, Shut on his book Lechem Shamayim.  First edition. Altona [section I]: the Press of Rabbi Aharon bar Eliyahu Katz, 1739. 45m 45-48, [1], 53-166 leaves. Stefansky Yesod p. 160 of the additions. Small tear and taping to the edge of leaf 64. Some tears along the edges of several leaves. Stains. Old binding with wear, reinforced with tape to its spine and corners. Good overall condition. Fine copy.  Gloss handwritten by the author On leaf 142b, on the upper margin of the leaf, a gloss handwritten by the author, Rabbi Yaakov Emden - 3 words with a correction.  Fascinating introduction and the reason for its title The title page is exceptional. Appearing on the title page is a rhymed introduction by Rabbeinu titled ”לכבוד תורה וחכמיה עשויה לנחת. באלפא ביתא העשוי לבלי חת”. In the introduction printed on verso of the title page, Rabbeinu describes events in his life in a captivating way. Among others, he explains why he is known as the Yavetz (יעב”ץ): his father told him to sign his name with the intiials of Yaakov ben Zvi (יעקב בן צבי) just as his father signed his name as Zvi (צב”י) - the initials of Zvi ben Yakov (צבי בן יעקב). The Yavetz therefore titled his book She'ilat Yavetz.  Ancient signatures On the title page and preceding leaf, ancient signature from the late 18th century including the following:  - ”הקטן ברוך מרדכי”. - ”שייך להרב המאוה”ג חריף ובקי מו”ה יהודא ליב, שהי' מ”ץ דק' סלאנים ואבד”ק הלוסק, וכעת אבד”ק פאריטש”. - ”שלמה במוהר”ר יחיאל משערשוב”.
