Lengthy and Special Historical Letter by Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengis with References to Maran the Maharitz Dushinsky - Kalwaria, 1937 - ”ולא ישמע עוד קול מחריד מארצנו” (And a horrific voice shall not be heard again from our country) - lengthy letter handwritten and signed by the Gaon Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengis Rosh Av Beit Din of HaEidah HaCharedit - with details about his immigration to Eretz Yisrael and his fear from riots by the Arabs - Kalwaria, 1937.  ”וביחוד למרן הגאון האדיר מוהרי”צ דושנסקי שליט”א” (and especially to Maran the great Gaon Moharitz Dushinsky Shlita), Rabbeinu sent his letter to the chairman of HaEidah HaChareidit Rabbi Moshe Leib Bernstern. In his letter, Rabbeinu discusses the arrangements for his trip to Eretz Yisrael, ”והחלטתי לעלות לציון לפני חה”פ לא עלתה בידי מפני כמה ענינים מפריעים מילי דמתא ומילי דפסחא ועוד ועוד.. ואני תפלתי ותקותי לד' כי יזכנו ליסע להצלחה ולשלום לארצנו הק' בימי הספירה...” (and my decision to immigrate to Zion before Chol Hamoed Pesach was unsuccessful due to some delaying matters, matters of the town and matters of Passover and more and mote... and I pray and hope that I shall meir travelling safely to our country on the days of the Sefirah...). Actually, Rabbeinu's appointment as Rosh Av Beit Din of Jerusalem faced many obstacles presented by the members of his community in Kalwaria, who were unwilling to relinquish the honor of such a famed Gaon living in their town and being their Rav. Therefore, Rabbeinu's arrival in Eretz Yisrael was delayed in he arrived in Jerusalem only in 1938.  At the end of his letter, Rabbeinu expresses his hope and prayer that the riots come to an end:  ”ויהא רעווא מקדם אבוהון דבשמיא שישקיט הרוחות ולא ישמע עוד קול מחריד מארצנו...” A special historical item for the history of HaEidah HaChareidit in general and Rabbi Bengis in particular.  Official stationery, written on both sides.  22X28 cm.  Filing holes. Good condition.  The Gaon Rabbi Zelig Reuven Bengis (1864-1953) served as Rav in Kalwaria, Belarus and then as Gaon Av Beit Din of HaEidah HaCharedit of Jerusalem. Received his rabbinic Semicha from the Natziv of Volozhin, Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor and Rabbi Shlomo Hacohen of Vilna. Author of Lifalgut Reuven and more. Among his disciples were Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. Was a famed Gaon. It is told that his in-law wanted to know whether all that was said of him was true so he sent a letter to the Rav of the Kollel, Rabbi Yaakov Yosef, who was then living in Vilna and who replied: ”ולדעתי יהיה מגאוני הזמן - ויתר הדברים אוכל להודיעו כי בפה ווילנא היו רוצים בו גדולי הרבנים דפה”.
